As a Key Accounts Manager at Westfield Egg Farm, I field a lot of phone calls and interactions with customers. My favorites are the ones that begin with, ‘Can you help us with…?’ I enjoy hearing what our industry partners are looking for and how our story can intersect with theirs—and hopefully, yes, I can help them with something. Of course, I cannot help with everything.
Can you help guarantee that HPAI will not impact us this year? No.
Can you help us with any unexpected market volatility? No…well, maybe…we can be consistent for you if that helps.
Can you help hens lay eggs faster? No, they have a pace they like to do that, and I leave that up to them!
Can you help us find a few more pallets for our customers? Yes, we can look into that.
Can you help us with freight solutions in major U.S. East Coast cities? Yes.
Can you help us with farm-to-market services while protecting our brand? Yes.
Like many Key Account Managers, when someone asks for help, I like to immediately consider multiple paths to help them get where they want to go. I manage several buckets of accounts at Westfield Egg Farm. I work with one bucket that offers consistent solutions to both small farms and big brands: Custom Packing.
The egg industry’s diverse packaging needs are constantly expanding. Food safety, brand security, and sustainability remain top priorities for both the small farms and large companies I work with. I work at our location in New Holland, Pennsylvania, and the plant is uniquely near all major East Coast cities, including, but not limited to, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
Along with a strategic geographic location, NHT, our sister company, provides freight and shipping support. I have seen that both the small farms and big brands prefer to concentrate on their eggs, brands, and customers, not on how to transport eggs between counties or states or how to deliver finished products to markets after packaging. If I am working with a
smaller farm, I arrange plans capable of grading anywhere between 1-5 pallets for small accounts that want to grow, or multiple truckloads for big brands that need to move volume efficiently every week.

Through Westfield Egg Farm, I specialize in various types of eggs, including Free Range, Organic, Pasture-Raised, and other Specialty Eggs. Through Custom Packing services, I provide the option of purchasing extra eggs. This benefits companies or farms that are unsure what to do with eggs that are smaller than desired, larger than needed, or that fail quality control for other reasons.
Our custom packing services cover every step of an egg’s journey from farm to market. These include, but are not limited to, inbound nest runs, cold storage, egg grading, egg packaging, carton designing, carton ordering, inventory management, outbound finished products, and market deliveries. Here are just two examples of how our services recently helped both a small farm and a large brand.
Small Farm Story
I have noticed that carton suppliers are increasing minimum orders to reduce inefficiencies. While this makes sense for the carton supplier, it places constraints upon the small family farm that sells eggs at the market. Westfield Egg Farm’s diversified egg business allows me to customize orders for the smaller players in our game. I believe in making room for the small family farm, or smaller egg dealer, to remain a part of our industry. Custom packing solutions are one way we provide needed solutions to the smaller operations in our industry.
Larger Brand Story
We are in times when HPAI has left all of us in the industry walking on eggshells (pun intended). Even the major players struggle to meet customer demands from time to time. With access to our own family-owned farm and network of small family farms, my custom packing clients can easily inform me when they need an extra few pallets to fulfill their customers' orders. When a large brand recently required assistance with supply, I was prepared to deliver for them.
Closing Thought
The best phone calls are those that start with, 'Can you help us with…?' If that question fits within the scope of Custom Packing, I feel assured that a solution is there somewhere for the customer, and we need to find it together. This is because I have seen, time and again, that custom packing services meet a diverse set of needs for the small farm and the big brand.
